OceanPlanet Foundation

The OceanPlanet/Made in America Foundation was founded in 1999 with the mission to create an inspirational American entry (OceanPlanet) in the Around Alone, Vendee Globe and other events. The mission of this effort is to provide an unmatched motivation/educational platform and to promote the importance of our world's oceans.

Inspire youth by making a lasting difference in a young person's life. You can sponsor a young sailor (with a tax-deductible contribution) to have the unforgettable experience of sailing with Bruce Schwab on OceanPlanet, or you or your business can also sponsor Bruce to present his inspirational multimedia show at the school of your choice.

2004-2005 Vendee Globe:

In collaboration with Bigelow Laboratories for Ocean Sciences, Bruce brought together the thrill and skill of solo circumnavigating the world by sailboat and the science behind the natural forces that shape these challenging environments. Teachers, students, and race fans were offered a unique opportunity to learn more about the oceans while following the adventure. Bruce's landmark achievement of being the first American to officially finish this world-renowned event has provided profound inspiration for thousands, young and old.

2003-2003 Around Alone race:

Bruce Schwab worked together with HSBC's Global Education Challenge during the arduous event to provide content for their program. Before, during, and after the race, Bruce appeared at schools in California, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Great Britain, South Africa, and New Zealand. In addition to supplying his constant and popular updates during the event, his presentations and storytelling have left a mark with children of all ages.

"Dear Bruce: I am writing to tell you how excited my students are about your entry in the Vendee Globe. We are looking forward to following your adventure as you attempt to become the first American to finish the Vendee. We are especially thrilled since your work with Bain students was so helpful during last year's Around Alone. You invited students to meet you in Newport and gave tours of your boat. Though your efforts, we participate in the Global Education Challenge, including the big student kick off prior to the start. Your emails and updates were of great help in following the many challenges you faced, and my students were inspired by your many efforts to make the situations you faced and the problems you solved real to them. Bain is an urban ring school, and many of my students have little understanding of things outside their community. Your messages opened their eyes to the greater world around them."

-- Bain Middle School Teacher Glenn Dewell

"Following Bruce on Around Alone has illustrated to the students that it's possible to follow your dreams and passion. Bruce has demonstrated firsthand even in difficult times, one needs to be strong and determined. Hard work leads to your dreams and goals coming true. You need not be afraid to be different, as long as you are true to yourself. These are just a few lessons the second graders have learned by following Bruce's ten month adventure on Around Alone."

-- Teacher Kathy Guzzo

"Bruce has continued to visit every year, and one year he took my entire class sailing on OceanPlanet in Alameda. We followed him around the world last year via email, and the kids looked forward to his exciting photos and videos. It enhanced our studies of geography, history, and weather. It was a unique experience for us all. Now there are several "generations" of my students to whom Bruce is an inspiration and a role model. He is a truly unique person, in that he has drive and ambition, gifts in speaking and writing, and the soul of a true adventurer."

-- Teacher Anne Thomas

"To accomplish a dream like sailing alone around the world, it is a lot of work. You may come across huge stumbling blocks that seem insurmountable, but if you just don't quit you can make amazing things happen. It may not be easy, but how you overcome the obstacles and setbacks that you didn't expect will tell you more about yourself than you can imagine. This is one of the best parts of the whole adventure, and the core message that I try to convey to the kids who follow OceanPlanet. I'm proud to say that this is what the OceanPlanet Foundation was created to do."
